001Ayah 1 of 5

May the hands of Abu Lahab[1] perish, and may he perish!

Translation notes: [1] i.e., the Prophet's uncle, who was one of the staunchest enemies of Islam.

002Ayah 2 of 5

Neither his wealth nor his worldly gains will avail him.

003Ayah 3 of 5

He will burn in a Flaming Fire,

004Ayah 4 of 5

and so will his wife[2], the carrier of firewood,

Translation notes: [2] i.e., ’Um Jamīl, who used to throw thorny branches in the Prophet's way and she used to slander him (ﷺ). The word hatab (firewood) was used by the Arabs to allude to slander and backbiting.

005Ayah 5 of 5

around her neck will be a rope of palm fiber[3].

Translation notes: [3] This surah was one of the earliest surahs revealed in Makkah, yet Abu Lahab persisted in disbelief. For him to disprove the Qur’an, all he had to do was to accept Islam, for the Qur’an condemned him to Hell.
