By the winds that scatter [dust],

002Ayah 2 of 60

and by the clouds carrying loads of water,

003Ayah 3 of 60

and by the ships that sail with ease,

004Ayah 4 of 60

and by the angels who distribute [blessings] by His command.

005Ayah 5 of 60

Indeed, what you are promised is true,

006Ayah 6 of 60

and the Judgment will surely come to pass.

007Ayah 7 of 60

By the heaven with its pathways[1],

Translation notes: [1] i.e., tracks or orbits.

008Ayah 8 of 60

Indeed, you [Makkans] have conflicting views[2].

Translation notes: [2] Concerning the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Qur’an.

009Ayah 9 of 60

He who is diverted from it is destined to be diverted.

010Ayah 10 of 60

Doomed[3] are those who base their beliefs on conjecture.

Translation notes: [3] May they be destroyed.

011Ayah 11 of 60

those who are steeped in ignorance heedlessly.

012Ayah 12 of 60

They ask [mockingly], “When is the Day of Judgment?”

013Ayah 13 of 60

It is the Day when they will be punished by the Fire.

014Ayah 14 of 60

[It will be said], “Taste your punishment! This is what you were seeking to hasten.”

015Ayah 15 of 60

Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and springs,

016Ayah 16 of 60

receiving what their Lord will give them, for they were indeed doers of good beforehand.

017Ayah 17 of 60

They used to sleep only a little at night[4],

Translation notes: [4] i.e., spending most of the night in prayer, reciting the Qur’an, and in supplication.

018Ayah 18 of 60

and before dawn they would seek forgiveness[5],

Translation notes: [5] Supererogatory prayers and supplications are recommended before dawn.

019Ayah 19 of 60

and in their wealth, there was a share for the beggar and the destitute.

020Ayah 20 of 60

On earth there are signs for those who are certain in faith,

021Ayah 21 of 60

and also within yourselves. Do you not see?

022Ayah 22 of 60

And in the heaven is your provision and all that you are promised.

023Ayah 23 of 60

By the Lord of the heaven and earth, this [resurrection] is certainly as true as the fact that you can speak.

024Ayah 24 of 60

Has there come to you the story of Abraham’s honored guests[6]?

Translation notes: [6] Honorable angels with Allah.

025Ayah 25 of 60

When they came to him and said, “Peace.” He said, “Upon you be peace.” [saying to himself] “Unknown people!”

026Ayah 26 of 60

Then he went quickly to his household, and came with a fat [roasted] calf,

027Ayah 27 of 60

and placed it before them and said, “Will you not eat?”

028Ayah 28 of 60

He felt apprehensive about them[7]. They said, “Do not be afraid,” and gave him glad tidings of a knowledgeable son.

Translation notes: [7] In their culture, if a guest refused to eat the food provided, it was considered a sign of ill will. See footnote 11:70.

029Ayah 29 of 60

His wife cried out loud, and struck her face [in astonishment] and said, “[I am] a barren old woman!”

030Ayah 30 of 60

They said, “This is what your Lord said. Indeed, He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.”

031Ayah 31 of 60

Abraham said, “Then what is your mission, O messengers?”

032Ayah 32 of 60

They said, “We have been sent to a wicked people,

033Ayah 33 of 60

to send down upon them stones of clay,

034Ayah 34 of 60

marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”

035Ayah 35 of 60

We brought out those believers who were there,

036Ayah 36 of 60

but We only found in it one Muslim household[8].

Translation notes: [8] Lot's family except his wife.

037Ayah 37 of 60

And We left there a sign[9] for those who fear the painful punishment.

Translation notes: [9] i.e., the ruins of Sodom or the Dead Sea in Palestine, as a lesson for people.

038Ayah 38 of 60

And [there is a sign in the story of] Moses when We sent him to Pharaoh with compelling proofs,

039Ayah 39 of 60

But he and his supporters turned away, and he said about [Moses], “A magician or a madman!”

040Ayah 40 of 60

So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea while he was blameworthy[10].

Translation notes: [10] For his disbelief and arrogance.

041Ayah 41 of 60

And [there is a sign in the story of] ‘Ād, when We sent against them the devastating barren wind[11].

Translation notes: [11] Devoid of all goodness such as carrying rain or fertilizing trees.

042Ayah 42 of 60

It spared nothing it came upon except that it reduced it to ruin and decay.

043Ayah 43 of 60

And [there is a sign in the story of] Thamūd, when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while[12].”

Translation notes: [12] i.e., only three days. See 11:65.

044Ayah 44 of 60

But they rebelled against the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them, while they were looking on.

045Ayah 45 of 60

They could not withstand it, nor could they ward it off.

046Ayah 46 of 60

And the people of Noah [were also destroyed] before them. They were indeed a rebellious people.

047Ayah 47 of 60

We built the heaven with might[13], and We are indeed expanding it.

Translation notes: [13] ’Ayd does not mean "hands" here. This is not from the verses of Allah's attributes, for Allah Almighty did not add it to Himself, i.e., He did not say, "My ’ayd, or Our ’ayd".

048Ayah 48 of 60

And We spread out the earth. How well did We smooth it out[14]!

Translation notes: [14] The earth was spread out to accommodate the creatures. Its spherical shape is mentioned in 39:5.

049Ayah 49 of 60

And We have created everything in pairs[15], so that you may take heed.

Translation notes: [15] Such as day and night, male and female, light and darkness, sweet and bitter, hot and cold, etc.

050Ayah 50 of 60

So flee to Allah[16]. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.

Translation notes: [16] From His punishment to His reward by shunning disbelief and sin and by obeying Him.

051Ayah 51 of 60

And do not set up another god with Allah. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.”

052Ayah 52 of 60

Likewise, no messenger came to those before them without being told: “A magician, or a madman!”

053Ayah 53 of 60

Did they suggest this to one another[17]? Rather they are transgressing people.

Translation notes: [17] i.e., Did the previous disbelievers pass on these false allegations to the pagans of Makkah so they repeat their words?

054Ayah 54 of 60

So turn away from them [O Prophet], for you are not to blame[18].

Translation notes: [18] After you have delivered the message.

055Ayah 55 of 60

But keep reminding them, for reminder benefits the believers.

056Ayah 56 of 60

I have not created the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

057Ayah 57 of 60

I seek no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me.

058Ayah 58 of 60

Indeed, it is Allah Who is the All-Provider[19], Lord of Power, the Mighty.

Translation notes: [19] He Provides His creatures with everything they need. Among His provisions is guidance.

059Ayah 59 of 60

Indeed, those who do wrong will have a share [of punishment] like that of their predecessors, so let them not ask Me to hasten it.

060Ayah 60 of 60

So woe to those who disbelieve from [the punishment of] the Day which they are promised.
