001Ayah 1 of 96

When the Inevitable Event comes to pass,

002Ayah 2 of 96

there will be none to deny its occurrence;

003Ayah 3 of 96

it will bring some low and raise others up[1].

Translation notes: [1] According to their deeds rather than wealth and social position, as is the case in this world. The righteous will be elevated in Paradise and the wicked will be debased in Hell.

004Ayah 4 of 96

When the earth is shaken violently,

005Ayah 5 of 96

and the mountains crushed to pieces,

006Ayah 6 of 96

and turn to scattered dust,

007Ayah 7 of 96

then you are sorted into three groups:

008Ayah 8 of 96

the people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right[2]!

Translation notes: [2] i.e., those who receive their record of deeds in the right hand and are destined for Paradise.

009Ayah 9 of 96

The people of the left – how miserable will be the people of the left[3]!

Translation notes: [3] i.e., those who receive their record of deeds in the left hand and are destined for Hell.

010Ayah 10 of 96

And the forerunners [in faith] are the forerunners [in Paradise].

011Ayah 11 of 96

They are the nearest ones [to Allah],

012Ayah 12 of 96

in Gardens of Bliss,

013Ayah 13 of 96

many from the early generations,

014Ayah 14 of 96

and a few from the later generations.

015Ayah 15 of 96

[They will be seated] on jeweled couches,

016Ayah 16 of 96

reclining on them, facing one another.

017Ayah 17 of 96

They will be served by immortal youths

018Ayah 18 of 96

with cups, pitchers, and glasses [of wine] from a flowing spring,

019Ayah 19 of 96

which will neither cause any headache nor intoxication,

020Ayah 20 of 96

along with fruits of their choice,

021Ayah 21 of 96

and flesh of birds that they may desire.

022Ayah 22 of 96

And [they will have] maidens with wide gorgeous eyes,

023Ayah 23 of 96

like pristine pearls,

024Ayah 24 of 96

as a reward for what they used to do.

025Ayah 25 of 96

They will not hear therein any idle talk or sinful speech,

026Ayah 26 of 96

except the words of peace, peace[4].

Translation notes: [4] i.e., only exchanging greetings of peace.

027Ayah 27 of 96

The people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right!

028Ayah 28 of 96

[They will be] in the midst of thornless lote trees,

029Ayah 29 of 96

and clusters of bananas,

030Ayah 30 of 96

and extended shade,

031Ayah 31 of 96

and flowing water,

032Ayah 32 of 96

and abundant fruit –

033Ayah 33 of 96

neither ceasing nor restricted –

034Ayah 34 of 96

and elevated mattresses [on beds].

035Ayah 35 of 96

Indeed, We have perfectly created them [i.e., their spouses],

036Ayah 36 of 96

and have made them virgins,

037Ayah 37 of 96

loving and of equal age,

038Ayah 38 of 96

for the people of the right,

039Ayah 39 of 96

many from the earlier generations,

040Ayah 40 of 96

and many from the later generations.

041Ayah 41 of 96

And the people of the left – how wretched will be the people of the left!

042Ayah 42 of 96

[They will be] in scorching wind and scalding water,

043Ayah 43 of 96

in the shade of black smoke,

044Ayah 44 of 96

neither cool nor refreshing.

045Ayah 45 of 96

Indeed, they used to be in luxuries before,

046Ayah 46 of 96

and persisted in the gravest sin[5].

Translation notes: [5] i.e., Shirk (associating partners with Allah) or disbelief.

047Ayah 47 of 96

They used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?

048Ayah 48 of 96

And our forefathers as well?”

049Ayah 49 of 96

Say, [O Prophet], “Indeed, the former and later generations

050Ayah 50 of 96

will be gathered on a predetermined Day.

051Ayah 51 of 96

Then you, O misguided deniers,

052Ayah 52 of 96

will surely eat from the tree of zaqqūm[6],

Translation notes: [6] See footnote 44:43-46.

053Ayah 53 of 96

filling your bellies with it,

054Ayah 54 of 96

and drinking scalding water on top of it,

055Ayah 55 of 96

drinking like thirsty camels do.”

056Ayah 56 of 96

This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

057Ayah 57 of 96

It is We Who created you; why do you not then believe [in resurrection]?

058Ayah 58 of 96

Have you thought about the semen that you emit?

059Ayah 59 of 96

Is it you who create it, or is it We Who are the Creators?

060Ayah 60 of 96

We have ordained death among you, and nothing can overcome us

061Ayah 61 of 96

from transforming you and recreating you in forms that you do not know[7].

Translation notes: [7] Or "from replacing you by others like yourselves [in this life] and creating you [in the Hereafter] in that which you do not know."

062Ayah 62 of 96

You are well aware of the first creation; why do you not then take heed?

063Ayah 63 of 96

Have you thought about what you sow?

064Ayah 64 of 96

Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who make it grow?

065Ayah 65 of 96

If We willed, We could reduce your harvest to rubble, leaving you to wonder and lament,

066Ayah 66 of 96

“We suffered loss,

067Ayah 67 of 96

rather, we are deprived.”

068Ayah 68 of 96

Have you thought about the water that you drink?

069Ayah 69 of 96

Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who bring it down?

070Ayah 70 of 96

If We willed, We could make it salty; will you not then give thanks?

071Ayah 71 of 96

Have you thought about the fire that you kindle?

072Ayah 72 of 96

Is it you who produced its trees[8], or is it We Who produced it?

Translation notes: [8] Referring to Arabian trees, markh and ‘afār, which produce fire when their green branches are rubbed against each other.

073Ayah 73 of 96

We made it a reminder [of the Hellfire] and a benefit for the travelers[9].

Translation notes: [9] By which they ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned in particular because it is of special convenience to them, although it is of use for all people in general.

074Ayah 74 of 96

So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

075Ayah 75 of 96

I do swear[10] by the positions of the stars –

Translation notes: [10] The negative article "la" (nay) means: The truth is not what is said or thought by disbelievers or others. The oath refutes certain objections of the disbelievers with regard to the Qur’an.

076Ayah 76 of 96

and this is indeed a great oath, if only you knew –

077Ayah 77 of 96

that this is indeed a noble Qur’an,

078Ayah 78 of 96

in a well-preserved Record[11],

Translation notes: [11] i.e., the Preserved Tablet.

079Ayah 79 of 96

that none can touch except the purified ones[12] –

Translation notes: [12] i.e., angels. It refutes the claim of the pagans that the Qur’an was sent down by devils. (See 26:210-212). Based on this verse, many Muslim jurists held that one should perform ablution prior to reading the Qur’an.

080Ayah 80 of 96

a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

081Ayah 81 of 96

Do you take this discourse lightly,

082Ayah 82 of 96

and instead [of thanking Allah] for the provision you are given, you show ingratitude?

083Ayah 83 of 96

Then why [are you helpless] when the soul reaches the throat,

084Ayah 84 of 96

while you are looking on,

085Ayah 85 of 96

when We are closer[13] to him than you, but you do not see?

Translation notes: [13] We are closer to him in terms of Knowledge and Power; Our angels are closer in person.

086Ayah 86 of 96

If you are not subject to retribution, then why do you not

087Ayah 87 of 96

bring that [soul] back, if you are truthful?

088Ayah 88 of 96

If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to Allah,

089Ayah 89 of 96

then [he will have] comfort, fragrance[14], and a Garden of Bliss.

Translation notes: [14] lit., fragrant basil. Paradise is described in the Qur’an as being pleasant to the eye, the heart, and the ear. Here it also emphasizes the scent.

090Ayah 90 of 96

If he is one of the people of the right,

091Ayah 91 of 96

[He will be told], “Peace be to you, for being one of the people of the right.”

092Ayah 92 of 96

But if he is one of the misguided deniers,

093Ayah 93 of 96

then he will be welcomed with scalding water,

094Ayah 94 of 96

and he will burn in Blazing Fire.

095Ayah 95 of 96

This is indeed the absolute truth.

096Ayah 96 of 96

So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
