001Ayah 1 of 30

By the dawn,

002Ayah 2 of 30

and the ten nights[1],

Translation notes: [1] i.e., the first ten nights of the lunar month of Dhul-Hijjah.

003Ayah 3 of 30

and the even and the odd[2],

Translation notes: [2] Of the things.

004Ayah 4 of 30

and by the night when it comes,

005Ayah 5 of 30

are these oaths not sufficient for those who have sense?

006Ayah 6 of 30

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ād

007Ayah 7 of 30

of Iram[3], who were people of great stature,

Translation notes: [3] Iram: an ancient tribe; or a well-known tribe in Yemen; or the grandfather of the people of ‘Aad, etc. Prophet Hūd was sent to the people of ‘Aad.

008Ayah 8 of 30

the like of whom had never been created in the land;

009Ayah 9 of 30

and Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the Valley;

010Ayah 10 of 30

and the mighty and powerful[4] Pharaoh?

Translation notes: [4] Or the owner of the stakes by which he used to torture people.

011Ayah 11 of 30

All of them transgressed in the land,

012Ayah 12 of 30

and spread therein much corruption,

013Ayah 13 of 30

so your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

014Ayah 14 of 30

Indeed, your Lord is ever vigilant.

015Ayah 15 of 30

As for man, when he is tested by his Lord by honoring him and bestowing blessings upon him, he says, “My Lord has [deservedly] honored me[5]!”

Translation notes: [5] Instead of being grateful, he is proud, attributing the favor to his own merit.

016Ayah 16 of 30

But when he is tested by restricting his provision, he says, “My Lord has [undeservedly] humiliated me!”

017Ayah 17 of 30

No indeed[6]! You are not kind to the orphan,

Translation notes: [6] It is not as you think. Allah puts people to test through prosperity and hardship and rewards their gratitude and patience in the Hereafter.

018Ayah 18 of 30

nor do you urge one another to feed the needy,

019Ayah 19 of 30

and you greedily consume the entire inheritance[7],

Translation notes: [7] Whether lawful or unlawful.

020Ayah 20 of 30

and love wealth immensely.

021Ayah 21 of 30

No indeed! When the earth is crushed over and over,

022Ayah 22 of 30

and your Lord comes[8] with the angels, rank after rank,

Translation notes: [8] To pass judgment between people.

023Ayah 23 of 30

and Hell is brought near on that Day – this is when man will understand, but what is the use of that understanding?

024Ayah 24 of 30

He will say, “Would that I had sent forth something for my [eternal] life!”

025Ayah 25 of 30

None can punish as He punishes on that Day,

026Ayah 26 of 30

and none can bind as He binds.

027Ayah 27 of 30

[It will be said to the believer,] “O the tranquil soul!

028Ayah 28 of 30

Return to your Lord, well pleased and pleasing [to Him].

029Ayah 29 of 30

Join My [righteous] slaves,

030Ayah 30 of 30

and enter My Paradise.”
